Pests and Pathogens: The Other Threats Every Vineyard Has to Watch

Smoke gets the headlines. Flooding gets the dramatic photos, which is why we’ve already covered them. But ask any grower what actually keeps them walking the rows week after week, and the answer is usually smaller and quieter: insects and fungal spores. These pressures don’t arrive as a single dramatic event — they build steadily across the growing season, and by the time the damage is visible, the window for an easy fix has often already closed.

Fungal Disease: A Race Against Humidity

Grapevines are remarkably good at attracting fungal pathogens, and the reason comes down to the plant’s own architecture. Dense canopies trap moisture, clusters sit close together, and the fruit itself is high in sugar — a combination that fungi are extremely well adapted to exploit.

Powdery mildew is the most persistent of these threats. Unlike most fungal diseases, it doesn’t need free water on the leaf surface to establish — just humidity and moderate temperatures are enough. Left unchecked, it coats leaves and berries in a gray-white film, stunts photosynthesis, and can crack berry skins, opening the door to secondary rots. Because its spores are windborne and can survive over winter in bark crevices, a single untreated block can seed an entire vineyard the following spring.

Downy mildew behaves differently but is no less dangerous. It thrives in wet conditions, especially after rain events, and moves quickly through the canopy in cool, damp weather. It produces the telltale “oil spot” lesions on leaves before shifting to attack young shoots and clusters directly — often the more destructive phase, since infected berries shrivel and fail to ripen.

Botrytis (bunch rot) is the disease most tied to timing rather than climate alone. It favors tight-clustered varieties where berries touch and trap moisture, and it becomes especially aggressive once berries soften near veraison — the same vulnerable window that matters so much for other ripeness-linked risks. A late-season rain on ripe, thin-skinned fruit can turn a clean vineyard into a bunch-rot problem within days.

Interestingly, this is the rare vineyard pathogen with a split identity. On red or thin-skinned fruit not yet fully ripe, botrytis is almost always unwelcome — it splits skins, invites secondary rot, and can wipe out a crop’s marketability fast. But under a very specific set of conditions — fully ripe, sound white grapes, warm humid mornings followed by dry, breezy afternoons — the same fungus becomes noble rot. Rather than rotting the berry outward, it perforates the skin and slowly dehydrates the fruit from within, concentrating sugars, acids, and glycerol while the fungus metabolizes some of the tartaric acid, leaving a distinctive honeyed, apricot-like character behind. It’s a genuine tightrope walk for growers: the same wet-then-dry cycle that produces noble rot in a good year can just as easily tip into gray rot if the humidity lingers too long or the fruit isn’t ripe enough to withstand it. This is precisely why great botrytized wines — Sauternes chief among them, along with Tokaji and select German and Austrian Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese bottlings — are produced in such limited, vintage-dependent quantities. Pickers often have to pass through the vineyard multiple times over several weeks, hand-selecting only the berries that have properly “noble” rotted rather than simply spoiled, which is part of why these wines carry such a premium.

Insects: Small Damage That Adds Up — Or Doesn’t Stay Small

Insect pressure in a vineyard splits roughly into two categories: pests that cause direct crop damage, and pests that matter because of what they carry.

Direct feeders are the more visible group. Grape berry moth larvae tunnel into clusters, creating entry points for rot. Japanese beetles and leafhoppers skeletonize leaves, reducing the canopy’s ability to ripen fruit. Spotted wing drosophila, unlike most fruit flies, can lay eggs in intact, ripening fruit rather than waiting for it to split or rot first — making it a late-season threat that’s easy to underestimate until damage is already done.

Vector species tend to worry growers more, because the insect itself may cause little visible harm while the pathogen it carries can be catastrophic. Glassy-winged sharpshooters transmit the bacterium behind Pierce’s disease, which can kill vines outright in warm climates. Vine mealybug spreads grapevine leafroll viruses, which don’t kill the plant but steadily degrade fruit quality and ripening consistency year after year. And phylloxera, the root-feeding aphid that reshaped the entire wine industry in the 19th century, remains a background risk anywhere ungrafted rootstock is planted.

Why These Pressures Are Harder to “Catch in Time”

Some vineyard risks are events — they happen on a specific day, and growers can assess and respond immediately after. Pest and disease pressure is cumulative. A mild mildew infection in June may not show visible symptoms until color change in August, by which point the fungicide options that would have stopped it early are far less effective. Similarly, a small mealybug population that goes unnoticed for a season can multiply into a vineyard-wide leafroll virus problem within a few years.

This is why the standard playbook for both categories leans so heavily on prevention and monitoring rather than reaction:

  • Canopy management — leaf pulling and shoot positioning to improve airflow and reduce the humid microclimates fungi depend on.
  • Scouting on a schedule, not just after damage appears — pheromone traps for moths, sticky traps for sharpshooters, regular leaf and cluster checks for early mildew signs.
  • Spray timing tied to growth stage and weather models, since both powdery and downy mildew have well-established infection-risk windows tied to temperature and moisture.
  • Rootstock and clone selection, particularly in regions with known phylloxera or nematode pressure, where resistant rootstock is a one-time decision that pays off for the life of the vineyard.

Some vineyard risks make for compelling stories because they’re sudden and visible. Insects and fungal spores are less photogenic, but they’re the pressures a vineyard fights every single season, and they reward the same qualities: careful monitoring, an understanding of how timing changes vulnerability, and a willingness to act before the damage is visible rather than after. In vineyard management, the quiet threats are often the ones that separate a consistently healthy operation from one that’s constantly playing catch-up.
