Beyond the Big Names: A Guide to Ontario’s Hidden Wine Regions

Beyond the Big Names: A Guide to Ontario’s Hidden Wine Regions **** **

Welcome back to the final chapter of our journey through Ontario’s remarkable wine landscapes. If you’ve been following our Ontario Wine Series, you’ve already explored the world-renowned slopes of Niagara and the limestone-rich charms of Prince Edward County. But today, we’re venturing even further off the beaten path.

At Katy Moore Wines, we love to “Taste the World, One Sip at a Time,” but some of the most exciting wine adventures are happening right in our own backyard, in places you might not expect. We’re talking about the sun-drenched shores of Lake Erie, the rugged beauty of Georgian Bay, and even the northern frontiers of the Ottawa Valley.

We cut through the marketing noise to find the best Ontario wines, the small-batch, artisanal bottles that tell a story of a specific place and a passionate producer. These aren’t the commercial wines you’ll find in every grocery store aisle. These are the hidden gems that make a bespoke wine program truly sing.

Lake Erie North Shore: Ontario’s Southern Belle

When we talk about Ontario cool-climate wines, we usually focus on the “cool” part. But Lake Erie North Shore (LENS) is where Ontario shows off its sunnier side. Located at the same latitude as northern California and the French Riviera, this is Ontario’s southernmost and warmest wine region.

Rows of grapevines stretch between labeled posts at sunset, with golden light illuminating the vineyard and hills beyond. Represents Katy Moore Wines’ focus on boutique, artisanal viticulture and sourcing wines directly from unique, low-yield terroirs.

LENS actually holds the title of Canada’s oldest commercial grape-growing region. It all started back in 1866 with Vin Villa Winery on Pelee Island. After the long quiet of Prohibition, it was Colio Estate Wines that led the way back in 1980, securing the first winery licence in Southwestern Ontario.

Heat, Soil, and Rare Finds

Because LENS has the highest heat-unit accumulation in the province, it’s a haven for varieties that need a little extra sun to reach perfection. Think robust Merlot, structured Cabernet Sauvignon, and even spicy Syrah. But the region also produces exceptional Ontario Chardonnay and Riesling that balance ripeness with a beautiful, refreshing acidity.

The soil here is a fascinating mix: light-textured, well-drained sandy loam and gravel sitting over a bedrock of shale and limestone. It’s this unique terroir that allows producers like the Muscedere family to get creative. The Muscederes own 163 acres but choose to plant only 13, focusing entirely on small-batch quality. They are even experimenting with Nebbiolo and Barbera, grapes you’d normally find in Italy’s Piedmont region, but which find a surprising home in this southern sun.

Wineries to Discover

Ottawa-Area Vineyards: The Northern Frontier

It might surprise you to learn that some of the most exciting Ontario Pinot Noir is being grown just outside our nation’s capital. The Ottawa Valley is proving that with the right care and the right grapes, you can produce stunning wines in colder climates.

Take Kin Vineyards in Carp, for example. They manage 47 acres of family estate and are home to some of Ontario’s northernmost plantings of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It’s a labour of love that requires incredible dedication to the land.

Near Ottawa, you’ll also find wineries specializing in “cold-hardy” varieties. These aren’t your typical European grapes; they are specially bred hybrids like Frontenac, Sabrevois, and Marquette, designed to withstand the harsh Canadian winters while still delivering complex, delicious flavours. Potters Settlement Artisan Wines hidden north of Tweed on a sixth-generation family farm, has turned an “impossible” wine region into an international award winner — thanks to pioneering cold-climate grapes, remarkably mineral-rich soil, and offbeat bottles like maple and dandelion wine that you won’t find anywhere else.

While many Ottawa residents often look to nearby Prince Edward County for their wine weekend fix, there is something truly special about discovering a world-class glass of wine grown right in the Ottawa Valley. It’s a testament to the ingenuity of Ontario’s viticulture.

Georgian Bay: The Emerging Cool

Heading northwest from Toronto, the area around Collingwood, Thornbury, and Clarksburg is quickly becoming a darling of the wine world. The Georgian Bay region benefits from the moderating influence of the lake and the shelter of the Niagara Escarpment, creating a unique microclimate for cool-climate grapes.

Six glasses of artisanal wine are presented in a tasting flight on a wooden stand, set against a sun-drenched vineyard backdrop. The selection includes a variety of white, red, and amber wines, demonstrating the diverse range of unique labels we source.

Coffin Ridge Boutique Winery pictured above, was a pioneer here, planting their first vines in 1999 and establishing the winery in 2007. They proved that this region could produce wines with incredible tension and character.

Another standout is Georgian Hills Vineyards. Founded by a fourth-generation apple grower, they’ve transitioned some of those iconic apple orchards into 17 acres of vines. They focus on the classics — Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Gewürztraminer — alongside expressive reds like Gamay Noir and Pinot Noir.

The wines of Georgian Bay are often described as “Fab and Fresh”: they have a crispness and a mineral quality that is perfectly suited for long summer afternoons by the bay.
